Good evening, everyone. I am Koji Sato. Thank you so much for joining us tonight to celebrate the 50th anniversary of JAMA’s Office here in Washington D.C.
Our 50-year journey has been built on a strong bond
with the people of America. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all our special guests—including Ambassador Yamada, and Chairman Saito of the Japan Auto Parts Industries Association. When JAMA opened its D.C. office in 1976, making cars in America was a completely new challenge. In the middle of this uncertainty, what kept us moving forward was our passion that: “We want to be a bridge between Japan and America.”
Our Vice Chairman at the time, Soichiro Honda, visited a vast empty land in Ohio. With his American colleagues, he looked out and said: “Let’s build the best production line in the world.” He wasn’t just building a factory; he was designing a future together with America.
This bold spirit was not his alone; it was a shared passion deeply rooted across all Japanese automakers of that era. Half a century later, this spirit still drives us.
Toyota’s new battery plant in North Carolina will serve as a foundation for their electrification journey. Isuzu’s new South Carolina plant, launching next year, will flexibly produce gasoline and electric commercial vehicles to support daily logistics.
These continuous efforts have generated over 70 billion dollars in manufacturing investment, and support nearly 2.4 million U.S. jobs. Our footprint has expanded to 27 states. One out of every three cars built in America comes from a Japanese brand. You welcomed us warmly. You made this land our “second home.” We treasure the beautiful connections
made with the American people over the last 50 years. The world around us is changing fast, with new technology and global challenges. But I truly believe that by combining our strengths —America’s cutting-edge AI, and Japan’s manufacturing— we can shape an exciting future of mobility together.
We cannot say what will happen in the next 50 years,
but our commitment to America will never change. It’s been an honor to walk this path with you over the past half century. We promise to keep making great cars and to bring smiles to everyone together. Thank you very much.
